Medical Qualifications
Prof Muntzer Mughal qualified in 1977 from the University of Manchester Medical School with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree. He furthered his training and was awarded Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeon (England) in May 1981. Returning to the University of Manchester, Prof Mughal completed his Master's of Surgery in 1985.
Medical Experiences
Prof Mughal is a General Surgeon and has extensive experience in upper gastrointestinal surgery for benign and malignant conditions. He has led many improvements in surgical services including the management of oesophago-gastric cancer. Currently he is an examiner for the Intercollegiate Specialty Board in General Surgery and is a Member of the Interim Review Mechanism Panel of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. In 1999 he was the first surgeon appointed to the Appraisal Committee of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) at its inception.
Prof Muntzer Mughal is Head of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery at University College Hospital in London and is available for private consultations at the Princess Grace Hospital, also in London. He also conducts a medicolegal practice in gastrointestinal surgery. In December 2012 he was made Honorary Clinical Professor in the Division of Surgery & Interventional Science at UCL and is also co Director of the Oesophago-gastric cancer Pathway Board for London Cancer.
His clinic interests surround surgery for oesophago-gastric cancer, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), re-operation and reconstruction following complications of upper GI surgery. His other specialist areas include the minimally invasive surgical techniques of laparoscopic cholecystectomy and anti-reflux surgery alongside endocrine surgery procedures of the thyroid and parathyroid.
