Medical Qualifications
Mr Rick Popert qualified from St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, University of London in 1985. His higher surgical training was completed at Guy’s Hospital in London and further research into urology was undertaken at King’s College Hospital.
Medical Training and Experience
Mr Popert was appointed as a Consultant Urologist in 1996 and since then he has developed a specialist interest in malignant and benign prostatic disease and since established a dedicated multi-disciplinary Prostate Clinic. His clinics offer expertise in active monitoring, radical prostate surgery (using the Intuitive “da Vinci” robotic surgical system), dynamic intra-operative prostate brachytherapy, and conformal external beam irradiation.
Mr Popert has particular surgical expertise in radical prostatectomy and he offers both conventional open radical prostatectomy and the robotic assisted approach dependent upon what is best for the patient. Mr Popert also has the most experience in the UK of single visit dynamic intra-operative prostate brachytherapy. The technique is particularly well suited to those patients with larger prostates or who have had previous transurethral surgery and is an excellent alternative to radical surgery with comparable disease control rates in patients with low risk cancer.
Mr Popert has been responsible for introducing a Holmium Laser Prostatectomy (HoLEP) service for benign prostatic disease at his NHS practice of Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital, London and his private practice of the London Bridge Hospital.
